The two main wound care certifications

WCC (Wound Care Certified)

The WCC credential is offered by the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy (NAWCO). It's the more accessible of the two major certifications and is open to multiple healthcare disciplines.

  • Eligibility: RNs, LPNs/LVNs, physical therapists, physician assistants, and physicians with a current, active license.
  • Experience requirement: No minimum clinical hours required, though clinical experience in wound care is strongly recommended.
  • Exam format: 110 multiple-choice questions, 2.5 hours.
  • Exam cost: Around $395.
  • Renewal: Every 5 years through continuing education or re-examination.
  • Key advantage: LPNs can earn this credential, which is rare for a specialty certification.

CWCN (Certified Wound Care Nurse)

The CWCN is offered by the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB). It's the gold standard in wound care certification.

  • Eligibility: RNs only. Must hold a current, unrestricted RN license.
  • Education requirement: Completion of an accredited Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) or Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Program (WOCNEP).
  • Exam format: 140 multiple-choice questions, 3 hours.
  • Exam cost: Around $395.
  • Renewal: Every 5 years through professional development or re-examination.
  • Key advantage: Higher recognition, especially in hospital settings and for leadership roles.
Which should you choose?

If you're an LPN in a skilled nursing facility, WCC is your path. It's one of the few specialty certifications open to LPNs, and it's well-recognized in SNF settings. If you're an RN and want the highest-level credential, go for the CWCN. A lot of nurses start with the WCC and upgrade to the CWCN after they get their RN license.

The salary impact

Wound care certification reliably translates to higher pay. The ranges below reflect what nurses with these credentials typically see in SNF and hospital job listings. Exact premiums vary by market and employer:

  • LPN with WCC: Usually earns $5,000 to $8,000 more a year than a non-certified LPN in the same facility.
  • RN with CWCN: Usually earns $7,000 to $12,000 more a year than a general-practice RN.
  • Dedicated wound care nurse roles: In SNFs and hospitals these positions often pay $75,000 to $95,000 for RNs, well above the general RN median.
  • Consulting roles: Experienced wound care nurses can earn $90,000 to $120,000 as independent consultants serving multiple facilities.

How to prepare for the exam

  1. Complete a wound care education program: Not always required for the WCC, but a structured program dramatically improves your pass rate. Programs range from 2-day intensive courses to semester-long programs. Costs run $500 to $3,000.
  2. Study the core topics: Both exams cover wound assessment, wound classification (pressure injuries stages I to IV, unstageable, deep tissue), treatment modalities, nutrition's role in healing, infection management, and documentation.
  3. Practice with clinical cases: The exams lean heavily on clinical scenarios. Study wound photographs and practice identifying wound types, staging, and appropriate treatments.
  4. Use official study resources: NAWCO offers a WCC Exam Study Guide, and WOCNCB provides a content outline and recommended reading list. Spring for the official materials.
  5. Get hands-on experience: Shadow your facility's wound care nurse. Volunteer for wound care rounds. Real clinical experience is the best exam prep there is.

Wound care demand in skilled nursing facilities

Skilled nursing facilities have an outsized need for wound care expertise. A few reasons:

  • CMS quality measures: Pressure injury rates are a publicly reported quality metric. Facilities with high rates face reimbursement penalties and reputational damage.

What a wound care nurse does day-to-day

A dedicated wound care nurse in an SNF typically handles:

  • Developing and updating individualized treatment plans.
  • Ordering and managing wound care supplies (dressings, negative pressure wound therapy, etc.).
  • Training and mentoring CNAs and other nurses on prevention protocols.
