What is a nursing home?
Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) provide 24-hour medical supervision and rehabilitative care for residents with serious health conditions. They are regulated by CMS and must meet federal and state standards for staffing, safety, and quality of care.
CMS certifies nursing homes under the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Facilities are inspected annually and receive star ratings (1–5 stars) published at Medicare.gov/care-compare. Maine has hundreds of CMS-certified skilled nursing facilities.
